DEFENSE BASE ACT

The Defense Base Act provides workers' compensation for civilians employed overseas on military bases or overseas military related installations and overseas contracts that are financed by the U.S. government. It does not, however, cover employees who work directly for the government who are covered under FECA. The Act is very broad and covers in certain circumstances even injuries which occur during recreation at the employment facility. There have been cases in which an employee was compensated for injuries suffered in a vehicular accident outside the employer's premises and another case in which an employee was compensated for having contracted tuberculosis. There are some time limits for filing claims. However, there are also some exceptions to these time limits.
